I suppose some of us just end up on the sweeter side of the taste spectrum while others lean more savory. Given my love for sweets, I’ve rounded-up my a list of the best places for sweet treats in Chicago.
Sweet Mandy B’s | Britt’s Pick: Iced Sugar Cookie
Nestled in the adorable Lincoln Park Neighborhood, this spot immediately catches your eye with it’s fun pastel interiors, At Sweet Mandy B’s their philosophy is that the best things in life are sweet, and I couldn’t agree more. They have a variety of amazing old fashioned desserts to choose from, but time over time again my pick remains their cookies, but not just any cookie. Their sugar cookie, with pastel vanilla buttercream, and sprinkles is simply irresistible. I’m not sure what they put in their vanilla buttercream, but MY GOD it’s delectable.
Magnolia Bakery | Britt’s Pick: Banana Pudding
Located in the right in the heart of Chicago, The Loop to be exact – though this place isn’t exclusive to the city I am happy that it’s here! Prior to it’s arrival, I remember hearing about this place on an episode of Sex & The City, and immediately added it to my bucket list of places to try, and I am so happy that I did.
More Cupcakes | Britt’s Pick: Red Velvet
This cute little spot is located in the prestigious Gold Coast, which is very fitting because More Cupcakes has some of the most beautifully crafted cupcakes I’ve ever seen. The owners describe it More Cupcakes as a modern-art museum meets cupcake boutique, and I absolutely adore this local gem for that. Not only are the cupcakes extraordinarily beautiful, but they are also moist and decadent – just like the perfect cupcake should be.
Ann Sather | Britt’s Pick: Cinnamon Rolls
Ann Sather has a few locations, but the original one is located in Lakeview and stays crowded especially on the weekends. It’s a family restaurant open until around 3pm daily, and all meals are accompanied with their signature cinnamon roll. Y’all these cinnamon rolls are cooked daily to perfection, and served warm with frosting dripping off of them. Just describing it has me feenin’ for one right at this moment!
Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits | Britt’s Pick: Butterscotch Pie
Keeping it real, pies weren’t really on my radar [with the exception of Thanksgiving] until I tried Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits. Now, pie has become a mandatory whenever I visit Logan Square during their hours of operation. Can you say addicted? Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits offers a wide variety of pies – I kid you not, I’ve never had the same pie twice, and they like to keep it fresh [literally] with their daily menu. The best way to indulge is on a beautiful day on their outdoor patio.
Black Dog Gelato | Britt’s Pick: Goat Cheese Cashew Caramel
Black Dog Gelato located in Ukranian Village has been featured on Food Network’s Unique Sweets, and y’all there’s a reason why. The flavors that they bring together to create gelato is unparalleled, because I’m sure you’re thinking did she just say Goat Cheese? I sure did! So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that another yummy flavor is Strawberry Basalmic. This artisanal gelato is made in small batches the morning and sold daily. It really doesn’t get any better than that!
Margie’s Candies | Britt’s Pick: Turtle Sunday
“Three scoops of ice cream, whipped cream, nuts, and a river of rich hot fudge. To many that’s heaven in a white clamshell dish…” this statement perfectly captures Margie’s Candie’s. It is a hidden gem in that has been serving the Chicagoland area since 1921 right in Bucktown. It offers a vintage charm that can be appreciated by young and old.
Windy City Sweets | Britt’s Pick: Sour Gummy Worms
Windy City Sweets is the epitome of what it means to feel like a Kid in a Candy Store. Located in Lakeview, you will find this little spot, which has been described as a Willy Wonka experience for chocolate enthusiast. Time over time it has been named The Best Candy Store in Chicago, and has 1,200 different products in order to guarantee that this story satisfies everyone’s sweet tooth.
Doughnut Vault | Britt’s Pick: Buttermilk Old Fashioned
Doughnut Vault located in River North has also received accolades from The Food Network. It is a former vault that is now stocked with more delicious goods. Locals love it for their dense, cakey treats that are handcrafted and simply exquisite. I first discovered Doughnut Vault when I caught their adorable vintage food truck known as the Vault Van parked out on Michigan Ave and decided to give it a try. From that point on, they’ve had a special place in my heart.
