Over the past couple weeks I’ve noticed that the temperature has dropped significantly, and the crisp Chicago fall weather has finally began to settle in. With that said, I think it’s about time that we had a conversation about cold weather pieces, shall we?
As I’m sure you noticed coat season is in full gear. Your choices are endless and the price ranges between them can be quite drastic – I felt obliged to offer a few tips to keep in mind while shopping for one. Let’s do this:
- Determine what type of winter coat is necessary for you. As you’re familiar there are so many styles of coats to choose from: puffer jackets, parkas, peacoat’s, down coats, the list is endless. Based upon the weather conditions of your environment you can decide which style is right for you. I can tell your right now Chicago is a place where you would want to invest in a heavy-duty down coat if you want to survive the brutal winter season.
- Consider this an investment. If you’re anything like me and tend to have more expensive taste when it comes to cold weather outerwear. I highly encourage you to do math prior to making an purchases. In this case you would take the cost of the item and divide it by the amount of times that you think you’re going to realistically wear the item. When I tell you this equation has saved me SO much money on unnecessary purchases…believe me!
- Purchase the correct size, which is usually one size up. This one may seem super obvious, but sometimes I found with online shopping it can be easy to forget@ Just keep in mind that this is a coat, and you will more than likely be wearing a couple layers underneath. With that said, it’s best to find a size that will still be flattering on top of your outfits.
- Keep in mind the best time to purchase. Grab your note book, because this one is about to be good! Hands down, the best time to purchase is off season. Now, understand the last thing on your mind is a coat in the middle of March/April (unless you live in Chicago), but let me tell you…if you have your eyes set one something a little pricey this can be the best way to score your dream coat at a very reasonable price.
These are just a few tips that I’ve personally learned through experience over the years when shopping. Any additional tips or things that you keep in mind when when shopping for outerwear
